Should you pay for your traffic ticket or go to court? What about speeding tickets, they’re not that serious, right?
The answer is that you have to think of the overall cost to you. A traffic stop that results in a ticket costs you more than just the fine on the ticket. It costs you time away from your job when you can be making money. It costs you more money for when your insurance goes up. It also costs you your peace of mind.
When you have a traffic attorney take care of your ticket, they take on the stress of the ticket for you. With certain tickets, it might also mean that you do not have to show up to court at all because your attorney can act on your behalf.

How do lawyers take care of traffic tickets?
Leen Nachawati uses her experience as a former prosecutor and defense attorney to negotiate your ticket. She hears your side of the story, how your interaction with the officer went, your driving history, and the law to negotiate the best possible situation for you. If the officer did not what he is required to do by law, Leen defends your rights. If you did in fact violate a traffic law, that does not mean this is something that has to ruin your record. There are still ways for you to get through the situation with a better outcome – but that only comes with the experienced negotiation of an attorney.
What can happen when your lawyer goes to court?
- Negotiations between the parties to ensure the best possible outcome for you. Your attorney has the experience and knows the best tactics to get you the results you want.
- Trials and hearings as necessary to protect your rights and make sure that your side of the story is heard.
- You are able to make an informed decision based on solid legal advice of an attorney who is familiar with what certain judges and prosecutors have a tendency to do.

How much does it cost to hire a traffic lawyer?
Well, that depends. Where is your ticket and what type of ticket is it? The reality is that sometimes it is cheaper to handle the case yourself because legal fees can cost more than the ticket. So why would anyone hire an attorney? The answer to that is that the cost of a ticket is much higher to you than just the cost of the ticket itself. A ticket costs you time off of work, and time is money. It also costs you quite a bit when your insurance premiums sky-rocket.

A traffic attorney can also help those who are especially vulnerable to bigger consequences:
- Drivers with a history of tickets: It matters what you have on your record. It affects how officers treat you when you are pulled over, and how prosecutors and judges treat your case. Additionally, if you get multiple tickets in a short amount of time, your license is on the line. Having your license suspended is expensive and life-changing. Tickets for driving on a suspended tickets start racking up, and your chances of facing jail time are heightened. We can make sure this does not happen to you.
- Commercial drivers: If you have a commercial driver’s license, that means your license is a means for you to earn your living. There are certain traffic violations that can lead to your CDL being revoked – so you have much more on the line than normal drivers. When the stakes are so high, you need a traffic attorney who can provide ease of mind and a better outcome.

What do I need to understand about points?
When you get a ticket, the top two concerns are as follows:
- How many points will this add to my record?
Each traffic ticket will add points to your driving record. If you get 8 points within two years, the Michigan Secretary of State will send you a warning letter. If you get 12 points within two years, your license will be assessed and you may lose your driving privileges. Tickets vary with how many points they carry – anywhere from zero to six points.
- Will this show up on my record?
Some tickets do not carry any points with them, but they still show up on your record. This is important because that means the court will send over documentation to the secretary of state to let them know that you have received a violation. Once the secretary of state has this information, they could place a hold or suspension on your license.

What is the difference between a civil infraction and a misdemeanor?
Civil infractions are offenses that do not carry any possible jail term. On the other hand, misdemeanors do carry a potential jail term. Many think that there is no way a judge would send them to jail just for driving with a suspended license, or for not having insurance. However, some judges may. It is important to have an attorney who knows the tendency of judges so that you know what to expect and you are able to make an informed decision on how you want to move forward with your case.

Is it possible to have a warrant out for my arrest just for a traffic ticket?
Yes! It certainly is. If you have a civil infraction traffic ticket that you ignore, the court will default you. That means you automatically become responsible for the fine. If that fine is ignored, the court can order you to court to explain why you have not follow the courts orders, or you risk jail time. Many times, this ends with drivers having bench warrants issued for their arrest.
On the other hand, if your ticket is a misdemeanor violation, if you do not show up to court the judge will issue a bench warrant for your arrest. This happens much more quickly than it would with a civil infraction, which takes longer to result in a warrant issued.
